Personal Auto Coverage Options
Collision Coverage
This type of coverage insures you against damage to your vehicle caused during an accident.
Comprehensive Coverage
This type of coverage insures you against all other physical damage to your car caused fire, theft, flood and vandalism. Comprehensive simply means any coverage that is not collision.
What is included in insurance coverage?
Deductible
This is the portion you’ll need to pay in the event of an accident before coverage kicks in, usually ranging from $100 to $1,000. (The higher the deductible, the lower the premium.)
Liability
Liability coverage pays for injuries or damage you cause to other people and their property if you are at fault in an automobile accident.
Medical Payments
Medical payments coverage pays medical expenses (up to a specified dollar limit) for you and passengers in your car if they are injured in an automobile accident — no matter who is at fault.
Personal Injury Protection
Also known as “No-Fault coverage”, Some states require Personal Injury Protection by law. This coverage pays for things like medical and rehabilitative expenses, replacement services and funeral expenses. It also pays for loss of income if you are injured in an auto accident and are unable to work.
Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist
This coverage pays if you are injured by a person who is either uninsured or doesn’t have enough liability insurance to cover the injuries you’ve incurred.
Special Coverage Options
Optional or special coverage includes extra services such as towing, rental reimbursement and roadside assistance. None of these coverages are required, but can be desirable to some motorists.
How much coverage do I need?
Choosing the appropriate level of auto insurance coverage depends on a number of factors, including:
- Assets you must protect (liability coverage)
- Value of your vehicle (collision and comprehensive) the amount of money you can afford to pay out-of-pocket (deductibles)
- Your risk tolerance
